DAY'S WAIT

DAY’S WAIT
CHARACTER
The major characters of the story is the son and the father
The son (schart) is dynamic characters and protagonist. He has a lot of characteristics.
·         Like any other 9 years old boy, he’s naïve. He thinked that he will die because of high fever. He believed the boys in France that told him he can’t live with forty four degrees temperature.
·         Full of imagination. He imagined the death that will approach.
·         Restless/anxious. He worried and can’t take it easy.
·         Clever. Full of thinking, the way he hurled questions and not that easy to accept what his father says.
·         Stubborn. Even though his father has convinced him many times nothing to worry about, he didn’t believe.
·         Crybaby. In the last paragraph mentioned “he cried very easily at a little things that were of no importance.”
·         Quiet/talkless. He never talked about his feeling and worries about the death to his father or others.
I, the father or the writer is a protagonist but he’s static characters because of unchanging personality from beginning to the end.
·         He’s a good, caring, attentive person, he take care of his son, give attention, give medicines, read him fairytale.
·         Calm. He’s not panic facing the problem and the boy acts.
·         Patient. The way he answered the boy’s question tireless, tenderly without fretful even though the son denied it and stubborn also; He keeps calmed him down; he checked the temperature on time.
·         Smart He know how to handle his questions, strange behavior, and bring around his son.
·         Courageous/brave. Once he hunted, he’s not afraid to use the gun so we know that he’s a brave man
·         Strong man. He he hunted when it’s cold outside, can pass the situation well.
The son has conflicts in his soul. He tried not to think of death but he couldn’t, it kept haunting and made him worry, so I can say that his thought is the antagonist in this story.
Minor character of the story is the doctor.

SETTING
"A Day's Wait" first printed in 1933 and Ernest Hemingway wrote based the story on the actual experience. From these I conclude the setting was in the beginning of 30’s in winter. From statement “Walk on the glassy surface” seemed it happened in the coldest winter, mid of winter maybe January or February.
The writer told he went hunting, there was bushes, creek, natural things, so it should be took place in the country area, somewhere in USA where the writer had stayed.
PLOT
The plot is flashback. The writer told about the son acted in the past in the first paragraph “He came into the room to shut the windows while we were still in bed…” In the middle of paragraph “it was a bright, cold day, the ground covered with a sleet that had frozen…”
exposition: at the beginning
complication: when the doctor came and check his temperature
climax: when the father checked the temperature and the it’s high. He tried to convinced his son that he won’t die with a fever of one hundred and two but the boy did not believe him. He was so anxious and his mind covered by0020fear of death.
Falling action: the son start to believe that he won’t die and able to overcome his fear of death.
Resolution: then he recover and becomes his old self again without any strange act of waiting for die.
